Last Cycle!

Reader’s!

How are you today? Inside watching football (like me) or outside enjoying a nice day? Last night was much better for me. Maggie was on the floor last night a was my RN. I so happy when I saw her. I got the right sleeping medication ans she was so quite when she came in throughout the night. Even though I slept pretty well, I was still very tired, worn out. The chemo and meds are hitting me a little harder this time. Dr. Read had mentioned that round three seems to hit people hard.

I slept on and off till around 1pm when My Man and The Boy came. My Man woke up and went out and brought in breakfast. He went out to this cool coffee shop that has some yummy breakfast treats. He then left to go home and get cleaned up. He took Timber for a nice walk and brought the boy back down. The Boy and I played about 6 games of Uno. It was fun. He and I then took a walk around the floor and my mom and dad came. They stayed for about 45min.

I am about to start my last cycle of chemo for this visit. That will have been a total of 7. Woot! Woot! I am getting my premeds now, which is good because I am kind of nauseous. After the chemo I will have my post hydration that will last anywhere from 12-24 hours. All of my numbers and counts look good. My blood pressure is going up and down. Went a little below 100 but to bad.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Monday. Hopefully my will not be as crazy as last time I was here! Keep a smile on!

Um? Where’s my Chemo?

Roll Tide Roll Saturday!

Happy Saturday Reader’s

I am tired Reader’s. I did not have a good night sleep last night. The RN last night (Tiffany & Maggie were off) gave me a pill to fall asleep. Now, I have no idea of the names of most of the medications I take. I call tell you what the they do and if a pill, what they look like but the name, no idea. So when she gave me a pill I was like what is this? I thought it was a pain pill for my little spill I had earlier in the day. She said no, it was a sleeping pill (I had already taken it). I told her that my sleeping meds where always given to me via my port. It is listed in my records. At that point, there wasn’t much I could do. The pill did not really work well. It took me forever to fall asleep and I was in and out of it more than the night before. It also left me kind of fuzzy and my face was all red this morning. Plus the bags under my eye have bags!

But the worse thing was that she didn’t realize I need to have my premeds at 6am and chemo at 6:30am. She came in at 4am to change one of the IV bags and then again later, not sure the time, to do something. At that time I asked if it was my chemo and she said no. Well, the next time she came in was for shift change at 7:15am. I was like, I was supposed to have my premeds and then chemo at 6:30am. She was like “what?”.  I know it is all written down in the records on the computer and I was here when Theo told her. Anyway, I got my chemo and I don’t think it will push me back to much but it was a bit disheartening. My Man was not happy. I think I may have her again tonight. None of my favorite are working tonight.

So, I finally told a RN that I had a little “fall” late yesterday. Well, I my chart is now marked! I am a true “fall risk”. She even called my doctor an told him. So embarrassing. He came around to see me today and was like “what happen”. Ugh. Well, yesterday I put ice in one of the blue gloves (from the five boxes in my room), and iced it. It did hurt. I was able to get my prosthetic on but it I could feel it. This morning it the swelling had gone down some and I was up and walking around but later when I took it off, there was bruising. Pickles. Oh well. I showed it to the doctor and he didn’t seem to worried. It does feel better.

I had visitors today! Rebecca and Devra drove done, as did Kristen and Baby K! She isn’t a baby any more, she is 2! She and her mama brought me breakfast. Thank you! It was a fun visit. Lots of laughing. My Man came back and then left again to get lunch. He brough back Bone Garden Cantina! Yummy. The Boy and my parents are on their was back from Montgomery. The Tri-Athlon was a success! The Boy was very happy to see his cousins. I can’t wait to see him!

Friday! Friday!

Good Morning!

I hope you are all doing well on this Friday morning. I can see the sun is out here in the ATL from my room on the 7th floor. Last night was uneventful. Slept till around 4:30am. Tiffany (yeah!) was my night RN and she had to change my meds and take some vitals. I had to use the restroom anyway and was able to fall asleep right after. My Man woke me up talking on the phone with his dentist. He overslept! Had to change is morning appointment to an afternoon one.

My chemo started a 6:30am and finished around 8:30am. Afterwards I took a “sponge” bath and changed my clothes, I had a bit of an incident. As you know, I am a below the knee (left leg) amputee. The only time I have fallen out of bed (because I didn’t put my prosthetic on) was right after The Boy was born and I was in the hospital. I had taken my leg off and then proceeded to stand up and fall. Not smart. Well, it happened again! I am ok but my leg is pretty sore. When I do put on my leg and walk it hurts. I will try to lay off of it for a while. I just feel like an idiot! Rookie mistake.

Later today my mom, dad and The Boy are headed to Montgomery, Alabama. On Saturday my dad and brother will be participating in their first triathlon. My dad just turned 69 yesterday!! I think they are both a bit nervous about the whole thing. The swim with be in a lake. It will be a staggered start, so not a total free for all. Last year there were 100 participants in the race, so hopefully this one will be low-key too. The cool thing for The Boy is that he doesn’t know his aunt and uncle and cousins will be there too. He will be very excited. Bad thing is I won’t see him till later on Saturday.

For breakfast I had a protein shake and a cup of coffee I made with the portable coffee maker Dona C. loaned to me. It works perfectly! I brought two containers of soup from Breadwinner for me to eat during lunchtime.

Theo is back this morning! The floor is booked full of patients but it is pretty quite right now. Soon I will get my soup and walk to the microwave. Get some exercise!

Reader’s!! The weekend is almost here! Be good, Be Safe and Enjoy it!!

All Checked in…Finally.

Good Afternoon Reader’s!

I hope you are all having a wonderful day. I am finally settled into my room here at Emory Midtown Hospital. The day started out well. Once I signed in at the doctor’s office this morning at 9am, they called me back to access my port and take blood samples. Then I was called back to meet with Dr. Reed ahead of my 10am appointment. Woot! Woot! The appointment went well and he was very happy with how I am doing and feeling.

Then we went to admissions and our train slammed to a halt. Turns out the seventh floor was booked. There was no available room for me. Pickles. They sent me to a temporary bed on the first floor. The woman in the next bed was not having a good day. There was loud moaning and groaning and she threw up once. Doctors kept coming in and asking me if I was Miss Smith. No, thank goodness. Miss Smith was not having a good day.

They were able to start my fluids around 1:30pm. This made me happy. I really did not want my chemo to start late and push everything back. God knows I don’t want to stay here any longer then I need too.

I finally got into my room around 3pm. Guess who was there? Theo! He had my white board all ready written out with my chemo orders. My room has a flat screen TV!!! Theo said that they are slowly replacing the TV’s and that I got one of the two rooms that have them. Sweet! My first round of chemo should start around 6pm. Like before, I won’t be able to take any pictures and post them while here in the hospital. However I will when I get back home.

Tomorrow is Friday, my favorite day of the week. Make sure you enjoy it!

I Hate My Pee.

I hate my pee.

For ten days, my pee stunk so bad. I mean STUNK. I have talked to about this before but I am going to address it once more. Why? Because, it’s my blog.  While in the hospital, my dual port is hooked up to two (most of the time) IV bags.

My Port

My Port

I had Thiamine being pumped in me pretty much the whole time I was there. The other port would have the chemo, pre-meds, potassium, you name it, was being pumped into me. Because of this, the RN’s wanted to make sure I am peeing enough. It’s a pretty big deal.

They set up the bucket in my toilet to catch it and measure how much I go, when I go. Gross right? Bleech!  Well, I pee ALL THE TIME and the thought of calling the tech or RN every time I go, to tell them how much and then they can dump it…ugh. Not going to happen.

So I kept track of it myself. Each time I went to the bathroom I wrote the amount, the time and the date down in a little notebook I had with me. The RN or Tech would check and cross off the amounts. This worked out great especially during the middle of the night. They didn’t have wake me up to ask, they would just check my little notebook. However, all this peeing, monitoring and the smell really made me hate my pee. I know, who loves their pee? But I really can’t stand mine. Coming home meant no more tracking but for the first four days I could still smell that chemo every time.

My Pee Log

My Pee Log

What’s hair today can be gone tomorrow.

The hair on my head is gone. The hair on my right leg is gone. Armpit hair= gone. Hair done there, also gone. However, my arm hair is not. The hair on lower left leg is still there too. Still have some of my eyebrows and eyelashes. I wonder why I lose the hair on my head but not the hair on my arms. How does the chemo know what hair to kill off?

Can’t I lose at least 10 pounds?

When you think of chemo patients, you think of bald, pale skinny people right? Yeah, no. Not me. I am bald. I am paler then usual. What I am not, is skinny. I mean, I thought I was going to lose some weight here! I had a friend who lost over 30 pounds! Me, I have lost 4. I am not saying I want to be weak or nauseous or have no appetite but COME ON! Give me 10 pounds! Guess I will have to lose it the old fashion way.  :)

Feeling Good Louis!

I know a lot of people are surprised by how I have been feeling, the energy I have, the appetite I have etc. I was talking to my friend Gerri who has had both chemo and two thoracotomies, like me, and she asked which I though was worse. The thoracotomies or chemo.

Thoracotomy

thoracotomy or thoracostomy is an incision into the pleural space of the chest.[1] It is performed by surgeons (or emergency physicians under certain circumstances) to gain access to the thoracic organs, most commonly the heart, the lungs, or the esophagus, or for access to the thoracic aorta or the anterior spine (the latter may be necessary to access tumors in the spine).

Thoracotomy is a major surgical maneuver—it is the first step in many thoracic surgeries including lobectomy or pneumonectomy for lung cancer—and as such requires general anesthesiawith endotracheal tube insertion and mechanical ventilation.

Thoracotomies are thought to be one of the most difficult surgical incisions to deal with post-operatively, because they are extremely painful and the pain can prevent the patient from breathing effectively, leading to atelectasis or pneumonia.–From Wikipedia

Hands down the thoracotomies were worse. Now I am not saying chemo is easy, cause it isn’t. I think one of the reasons why I am doing so well, is because I am admitted into the hospital for five days and do receive all the different medications and Thiamine. Then I come home and get injections of neupogen for five days. I also try to keep ahead of the nausea as best as I can, so that when it does hit, I am only in pain for about twenty minutes. But who knows, every cycle of chemo has been a little bit different. I wonder how cycle three will affect me.

My Head is Cold

My Brother asked me to talk about being bald. He thinks it is great I am bald, since he is bald too. We probably look the most alike then we ever have. Here are some random thoughts on being bald:

-Taking a shower takes all of 5 minutes if that. All I really have to do is wash my body. I really have no idea what bald men do that keeps them in there so long.

-If my head is not under the water while in the shower, it gets really cold.

-My head sweats a lot.

-I sleep in a beanie or my winter hat with a ball on top.

-I still shampoo my head out of habit.

-Sometimes I forget I am bald and when I see myself in the mirror I am like “what the hell happened to you!”

-I never go out in public without a head covering. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

-I am not sure what it feels like to swim bald but should find out this weekend.

-I have a small red birthmark on the back on my head.

Give Away!

Reader’s! My Hotel Yorba and doing its first ever giveaway! Woot! Woot! Over the next three days, three people (total) will have a chance to win their own Hotel Yorba key chain. I know right!?!

Here is what you need to do:

1. Comment on the Saturday, Sunday or Monday’s posts. You can comment as often as you want. Tell me what you like. Don’t like. What you want to see more of on the Blog. Do want to see an interview with Timber or Turbo? You tell me…as many times as you want.

2. The contest will end Tuesday night @ midnight. On Wednesday morning, The Boy will randomly choose one person from each day’s comments as the winner. To make it fair and scientific, he will have his eyes closed.

Go make a comment!!!

Friday, The Best Day of the Week!

Happy Friday!

Friday is the best day of the week don’t you think? I had a busy and fun Friday planned. I had a 9:30am conference call with a client who lives in Florida. Turns out she had been in Maryland for the last two months! Don’t people go to the beach in the summer? Due to the fact that my brother lives on the panhandle, as does my client, I know it has rained there all summer, just like here in the ATL. I think she had better summer weather up north then we did!

After my appointment I met my girls Rebecca and Devra for an early lunch at Seasons 52. We shared a flat bread and then I had a caprese like salad and a side of caesar broccoli. It was all very good. The highlight of the lunch was when the waiter spilled unsweet tea all over Rebecca. This is the second time I have eaten there where the waiter had knocked a glass of tea or wine all over someone at my table. I think it’s me.

Next we hit the mall where we went to Lulu Lemon. I have a great yoga mat I bought from them earlier Spring. I thought I would be crazy and buy a color other than black. I got a light blue. Well, it is now stained from when I roll it up. The back of the mat has stained the front with light yellow lines. I can’t get them off and it looks like crap. One of my yoga teachers is a Lulu Lemon Ambassador and I asked her about when I saw her at class on Wednesday. She told me to take it back, which I mentioned to the salesperson. Guess who got her a brand new black yoga mat! This girl, that’s who!! I love my mat. Lulu Lemon just got a star in my book!

Next we hit the make-up counter at the Van Maur department store. This was the first time I have ever been at Van Maur and found it very clean, open and the people very nice. Rebecca said she thought we would get good service there and she was right. Our mission, get some help for my eyebrows!! Readers! They are falling out. Right now I look like I got them waxed and then went crazy randomly plucking them. Not good.

Getting the brows done.

Getting the brows done.

Before

Before

We found a very helpful saleswoman at the Estee Lauder counter. We first tried what looked like blonde mascara and Rebecca stated that it looked terrible. The girl was right. It did. Next our saleswoman hooked me with a great eyebrow pencil in light blonde. The pencil was much more natural and I even think I can apply it properly.

After

After

I think my brows look pretty good. After we finished the eyebrows we looked at eyeshadows and nail polish, fun stuff. I got some of both (plus free two free sample), Rebecca got eyeshadow and Devra some mascara. It’s fun to play with makeup!

Ready to Sparkle!

Ready to Sparkle!

Devra had to head back to work after we finished up at Van Maur. Rebecca and I then headed White House Black Market. I wanted to get some solid colored shirts. Patterns tend to clash with my new fancy head coverings. I found three tops, two on sale, and a pair of slacks. I got 5% off my entire bill (I have the Black Book) plus an additional $25 off my bill. Woot! Woot!Lastly we hit Macy’s. Rebecca looked at shoes and then looked for a sporty rain coat. It was a bust on both.

Today was great. I was worn out by the time I picked up The Boy from the bus stop but I had a great time. Thank you again for helping me out Rebecca and Devra! My brows are looking good and I thank you for that!

Back in Business!

I rested up most of the today, took a shower and picked up The Boy from the bus. How cool was that? Kinda cool. Our school system is having issues with the buses and we found out during the day that they were adding another bus to our afternoon route. The Boy had said at one point they were sitting 4 to a seat. So he is now on the “gray” bus and only 2 to a seat. They are still running behind. His drop off time is supposed to be around 2:35ish but he didn’t get dropped off till a bit after 3:00pm.  Hopefully they get it all worked out soon.

When we got back rested and then went to get me a new baby! We went and got a new computer! Woot! Pictures are back people! We discussed dropping off the old one to see if we could fix it. The least we want is all the info on it. If they can fix it, we will see how much it will cost. We have come up with a price we would be willing to pay to have it fixed. If we do, we will put it in the kitchen and it will become The Boy’s computer. I am so happy to have a Mac again. So easy to set up. So pretty! Ok, here are some pictures from my last hospital visit.

This one of my night RN’s, Tiffany. She rocks! SHe got me through some rough nights. SHe has the calmest sweetest voices ever. Was so quiet when she would come in at 1am or 3am or 4am…whenever that dam monitor beeped! She also made sure I got out of there as early as possible on Tuesday morning. This picture was taken at 4am and she was on it!

Two posts today Readers! Time for me to get some rest!
