I Hate My Pee.

I hate my pee.

For ten days, my pee stunk so bad. I mean STUNK. I have talked to about this before but I am going to address it once more. Why? Because, it’s my blog.  While in the hospital, my dual port is hooked up to two (most of the time) IV bags.

My Port

My Port

I had Thiamine being pumped in me pretty much the whole time I was there. The other port would have the chemo, pre-meds, potassium, you name it, was being pumped into me. Because of this, the RN’s wanted to make sure I am peeing enough. It’s a pretty big deal.

They set up the bucket in my toilet to catch it and measure how much I go, when I go. Gross right? Bleech!  Well, I pee ALL THE TIME and the thought of calling the tech or RN every time I go, to tell them how much and then they can dump it…ugh. Not going to happen.

So I kept track of it myself. Each time I went to the bathroom I wrote the amount, the time and the date down in a little notebook I had with me. The RN or Tech would check and cross off the amounts. This worked out great especially during the middle of the night. They didn’t have wake me up to ask, they would just check my little notebook. However, all this peeing, monitoring and the smell really made me hate my pee. I know, who loves their pee? But I really can’t stand mine. Coming home meant no more tracking but for the first four days I could still smell that chemo every time.

My Pee Log

What’s hair today can be gone tomorrow.

The hair on my head is gone. The hair on my right leg is gone. Armpit hair= gone. Hair done there, also gone. However, my arm hair is not. The hair on lower left leg is still there too. Still have some of my eyebrows and eyelashes. I wonder why I lose the hair on my head but not the hair on my arms. How does the chemo know what hair to kill off?

Can’t I lose at least 10 pounds?

When you think of chemo patients, you think of bald, pale skinny people right? Yeah, no. Not me. I am bald. I am paler then usual. What I am not, is skinny. I mean, I thought I was going to lose some weight here! I had a friend who lost over 30 pounds! Me, I have lost 4. I am not saying I want to be weak or nauseous or have no appetite but COME ON! Give me 10 pounds! Guess I will have to lose it the old fashion way.  :)

Feeling Good Louis!

I know a lot of people are surprised by how I have been feeling, the energy I have, the appetite I have etc. I was talking to my friend Gerri who has had both chemo and two thoracotomies, like me, and she asked which I though was worse. The thoracotomies or chemo.

Thoracotomy

thoracotomy or thoracostomy is an incision into the pleural space of the chest.[1] It is performed by surgeons (or emergency physicians under certain circumstances) to gain access to the thoracic organs, most commonly the heart, the lungs, or the esophagus, or for access to the thoracic aorta or the anterior spine (the latter may be necessary to access tumors in the spine).

Thoracotomy is a major surgical maneuver—it is the first step in many thoracic surgeries including lobectomy or pneumonectomy for lung cancer—and as such requires general anesthesiawith endotracheal tube insertion and mechanical ventilation.

Thoracotomies are thought to be one of the most difficult surgical incisions to deal with post-operatively, because they are extremely painful and the pain can prevent the patient from breathing effectively, leading to atelectasis or pneumonia.–From Wikipedia

Hands down the thoracotomies were worse. Now I am not saying chemo is easy, cause it isn’t. I think one of the reasons why I am doing so well, is because I am admitted into the hospital for five days and do receive all the different medications and Thiamine. Then I come home and get injections of neupogen for five days. I also try to keep ahead of the nausea as best as I can, so that when it does hit, I am only in pain for about twenty minutes. But who knows, every cycle of chemo has been a little bit different. I wonder how cycle three will affect me.

My Head is Cold

My Brother asked me to talk about being bald. He thinks it is great I am bald, since he is bald too. We probably look the most alike then we ever have. Here are some random thoughts on being bald:

-Taking a shower takes all of 5 minutes if that. All I really have to do is wash my body. I really have no idea what bald men do that keeps them in there so long.

-If my head is not under the water while in the shower, it gets really cold.

-My head sweats a lot.

-I sleep in a beanie or my winter hat with a ball on top.

-I still shampoo my head out of habit.

-Sometimes I forget I am bald and when I see myself in the mirror I am like “what the hell happened to you!”

-I never go out in public without a head covering. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

-I am not sure what it feels like to swim bald but should find out this weekend.

-I have a small red birthmark on the back on my head.

Friday, The Best Day of the Week!

Happy Friday!

Friday is the best day of the week don’t you think? I had a busy and fun Friday planned. I had a 9:30am conference call with a client who lives in Florida. Turns out she had been in Maryland for the last two months! Don’t people go to the beach in the summer? Due to the fact that my brother lives on the panhandle, as does my client, I know it has rained there all summer, just like here in the ATL. I think she had better summer weather up north then we did!

After my appointment I met my girls Rebecca and Devra for an early lunch at Seasons 52. We shared a flat bread and then I had a caprese like salad and a side of caesar broccoli. It was all very good. The highlight of the lunch was when the waiter spilled unsweet tea all over Rebecca. This is the second time I have eaten there where the waiter had knocked a glass of tea or wine all over someone at my table. I think it’s me.

Next we hit the mall where we went to Lulu Lemon. I have a great yoga mat I bought from them earlier Spring. I thought I would be crazy and buy a color other than black. I got a light blue. Well, it is now stained from when I roll it up. The back of the mat has stained the front with light yellow lines. I can’t get them off and it looks like crap. One of my yoga teachers is a Lulu Lemon Ambassador and I asked her about when I saw her at class on Wednesday. She told me to take it back, which I mentioned to the salesperson. Guess who got her a brand new black yoga mat! This girl, that’s who!! I love my mat. Lulu Lemon just got a star in my book!

Next we hit the make-up counter at the Van Maur department store. This was the first time I have ever been at Van Maur and found it very clean, open and the people very nice. Rebecca said she thought we would get good service there and she was right. Our mission, get some help for my eyebrows!! Readers! They are falling out. Right now I look like I got them waxed and then went crazy randomly plucking them. Not good.

Getting the brows done.

Getting the brows done.

Before

Before

We found a very helpful saleswoman at the Estee Lauder counter. We first tried what looked like blonde mascara and Rebecca stated that it looked terrible. The girl was right. It did. Next our saleswoman hooked me with a great eyebrow pencil in light blonde. The pencil was much more natural and I even think I can apply it properly.

After

After

I think my brows look pretty good. After we finished the eyebrows we looked at eyeshadows and nail polish, fun stuff. I got some of both (plus free two free sample), Rebecca got eyeshadow and Devra some mascara. It’s fun to play with makeup!

Ready to Sparkle!

Devra had to head back to work after we finished up at Van Maur. Rebecca and I then headed White House Black Market. I wanted to get some solid colored shirts. Patterns tend to clash with my new fancy head coverings. I found three tops, two on sale, and a pair of slacks. I got 5% off my entire bill (I have the Black Book) plus an additional $25 off my bill. Woot! Woot!Lastly we hit Macy’s. Rebecca looked at shoes and then looked for a sporty rain coat. It was a bust on both.

Today was great. I was worn out by the time I picked up The Boy from the bus stop but I had a great time. Thank you again for helping me out Rebecca and Devra! My brows are looking good and I thank you for that!

Day 4 (maybe my last!) of the chemo Tour

Good day! How are you guys? I am doing ok. My Man and I had a good nights sleep thanks to RN Maggie. She was great! Very quiet. Justin said he even sleep pretty well. I have requested Maggie for tonight too. At the moment, I have having my 5th cycle of chemo. Only one more to go! That means, if all goes well, I will be going home sometime tomorrow! WOOT! WOOT! People!

We got up around 7:30am and kinda laid around. What else do you do? Around 8am I got cleaned up and into today’s PJ’s. My Man went to find a good cup of coffee and some yummy treats to share. Which was a good thing. The bagel I ordered was stale. Ick! I then got tired and slept on and off till about noon. Crazy how tired the meds they give you can make you. It’s not like I do much while I am here!

After I woke up, I talked to my Dad, who is installing a new screened in door on our screened in porch. He is also painting it red! (Thanks Dad!). The Boy was in the background giving him tips and making sure he was doing it right. Nice to know things haven’t change since I am gone. Talked to my Mom and she had been cleaning (THANK YOU) the house. She said all the kids are good but that Turbo my be going broody. She has never done this before. It is usually Poppy. It could be that they are both just hot, the weather has been crazy hot and humid here.

Tomorrow is the first day of school for The Boy. I am sad that I will miss it but happy I should be home when he gets home. I am afraid he is going to have a rude awaking when Nana Pete comes and wakes him up at 6am!

My Man and The Boy have come down for a visit. My Boy and I went for a walk around the floor and met some of the RN’s and staff. Now he is watching a movie on my iPad and My Man is on the computer. House Hunters International is on the TV. All we are missing is Panny, Simon and Timber!! I miss them all. I know that Panny would love sleeping on the bed with me. She would like it when I moved the bed up and down.

Reader’s! I hope you are havig a great day and living life large!!!

The Little F&@ker is Shrinking!

It’s Shrinking!!

Guess where I am right now? I am in the hospital!! Woot! Woot! I went in this morning to have my CT scan done. Afterwards we headed up to see the doctor. First, I had to get my lab work done, which is having blood drawn and peeing in a cup. Karen, the RN, stated she would access my port to draw the blood. I asked her if it was going to hurt. “Won’t hurt me”, she replied. That had me laughing. She said some people said it hurts a little and some say don’t feel a thing. Well, let me tell you, those people who say they don’t feel anything are liars. I felt something alright. It felt like someone pushed a push-pin into my chest, twice. However, it was nice knowing I won’t be poked for a while.

Dr. Read was very happy with my scans. He said he would have been happy if the tumor had just stopped growing but for it so have shrunk a little, he was very excited. Made me and the family very happy to hear him say that. He also said that I would have four total treatments. After that we will look at the tumor and see if it can be surgically removed or if they can zap it with radiation. We are crossing our fingers for the surgery.

I am all checked in and am waiting for my RN, Theo (got a big hug from him), to start my chemo. As with last time, I won’t be able to post any pictures but I am taking them for a “hospital photo” post when I get back. Thanks again for all your prayers and positive vibes.

It is Time to ROCK!

Kiss Kitty!!!

Kiss Kitty!!!

How Cool Is She??!! She is SUPER COOL!!!! Big shout out to Tracy K. When The Boy and I opened the package and saw what it was, we both started yelling. So cool. Plus anything Hello Kitty rocks.

This morning is starting out better than last. I was able to take a nap yesterday and take some NyQuil last night, so I got some rest. Still woke up with an aching jaw and sore throat but the cough, knock on wood, has not been too bad. I don’t know if I have mentioned this before, but the coughing has nothing to do with a cold or being sick. The doctor thinks it has to with the tumor pushing up against my trachea. So if the cough is bad, the tumor is pushing against it. If is isn’t bad, as in I am not coughing as much, it isn’t pushing up against it. And one reason for it not pushing up against it is that is getting smaller. And that folks is what we want to happen! Keep those fingers and toes crossed!

Going to play it smart today and not go crazy. I do have two places I would like to go to today both very quick visits. The rest of the day will be me at home working, resting and doing some laundry. I need more PJ pants!

That is all for now. Now Readers, being like Hello Kitty and go out and ROCK!!!

So it begins…

Here I am on Easter working on getting my first “real” blog set up. I woke up last night a 3am and sat in bed for 2 hours trying to figure out why I was having such a problem setting this dam thing up! When that (and My Man’s snoring) almost drove me to the edge, I thought of what I wanted to share to the world on my blog…you now the fun stuff! So, as I fumble my way through setting this up, here are a few things I am planning to include:

            • Food Porn- I love to eat really good food. I really like it when I don’t make it, serve it or clean up after it, so I will be reviewing my favorite restaurants and not so favorite.

              Pan Roasted Wild Striped Bass

              Pan Roasted Wild Striped Bass

            • Getting Fit- Like I said, I love food. However, I don’t like the side effects. Also, I am turning the big 40 soon and I would like to be in the best shape of my adulthood as I enter a new stage in life. Plus, the clothes! Love the clothes! I will let you know where I get them, deals I find and oh, the workouts I like.

          • What am I listening to- We love music here at Hotel Yorba! I will up date you on not only what I am listening to but also what My Man and The Boy are listening to.
          • The Illness- I have had cancer three times over the past 11 years. I know, I know, I couldn’t just have it once! No!! Had to have three times! I am still on this jounery and will be for the rest of my life. I will inform you about my type of cancer and update you on my health. Right now all is well!
          • The Leg- This ties into The Illness and Getting Fit
          • The Job- I have my own business, which is great cause I am the boss and in charge. But is is also is hard cause I am the boss and in charge! The buck stops here as they say. I will talk about the day to day issues a working mom has to deal with. I am in finance and due to the strict guidelines  set up by the SEC, NYSE, my broker dealer, my compliance officer and everyone else out there who likes to make rules, I will not be discussing what I do on a day to day regarding my business. You want financial advice? Find a financial advisor! We rock!
          • Whatcha Reading?- I LOVE to read! I read all kinds of books and will let you know what I think is good, bad, funny, sad and steamy! You have a book you want me to read, let me know.
          • The Kids & The Girls- The Kids are the four legged members of our family. They are our cats Simon and Pandora. They also go by the names of Chunky Monkey and Porky Panny. The Girls are our two legged members of our family. Our Chickens Turbo and Poppy.

There will also be the day to day updates on what the heck is going on down here in the ATL. I am going to start out by letting a few friends and family know about My Hotel Yorba, but please share it with your friends and family. Once everything is up and running smoothly, I am planning on updating one to two times a day. Any suggestions you may have are welcomed!!

For all those who celebrate Easter, Happy Easter! For those of you who do not, Happy Sunday! And for those whose kids are on Spring Break this week like The Boy is, Happy Spring Break!!
